Research Expertise
Dr. Alan McLaughlin is the Director of the Division of Applied Science and Technology at the NIBIB. With a background in physics, biophysics, and physiology, his portfolio includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Biochemistry Department at Oxford University, and subsequently held academic appointments in the Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratories, and also in the Biochemistry and Biophysics Departments at the University of Pennsylvania. Here at NIH, Dr. McLaughlin has previously worked in Intramural Programs at the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, as well as the National Institute of Mental Health. His early research investigated use of magnetic resonance techniques to study the structure and function of enzymes and cellular membranes. Now, for many years, his research focus has been on the development of novel MRI and MRS approaches used to quantitate and image physiological function, such as oxygen consumption and blood flow.
