January 9, 2002: Working Group Established by NIBIB To Review NIH Research Grants and Make Recommendations for Transfer to NIBIB
NIBIB is establishing a working group to review research grants funded by NIH ICs in FY 2000, and make recommendations for the transfer of grants consistent with the NIBIB mission to NIBIB. The task force began its work in January, 2002. The NIH Director is due to submit a report on findings of the working group to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees by March 31, 2002. The working group was formed in response to Congressional concern that was expressed in the Conference report for FY 2002 appropriations. Specific language of the report commends NIBIB for agreeing to establish a task force, directs that the group establish criteria to be applied consistently to all grants under consideration, and states that, "creation of the joint NIH-extramural task force should help to ensure that all parties have confidence in the process."
Membership of the working group, made up of representatives from American Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering (AIMBE), Academy of Radiology Research (ARR) and NIH, is shown in the table below.

January 11, 2002: NIBIB FY 2002 Budget Approved
On January 10, President George W. Bush signed the FY 2002 Appropriations Bill which authorizes a total budget of $112 million for the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) at the NIH. This authorization provides the first "official" budget for the NIBIB and enables the Institute to make research and training grants consistent with its mission. NIBIB staff is proceeding with (l) the development of research and training initiatives for funding during FY 2002 and (2) notification of investigators whose existing grants will be transferred to the NIBIB. As soon as the initiative announcements are released, information will be posted on the NIBIB Web site (www.nibib.nih.gov) and in the "NIH Guide".
January 25, 2002: First NIBIB Research Initiatives Planned for Molecular Imaging and Sensors
Bioengineering and biomedical imaging investigators are advised that the NIBIB is planning its first research initiatives in the areas of molecular-level imaging and sensors. Announcements concerning these initiatives should be released in the very near future. Current plans are to have a rapid turn-around for associated applications. Investigators with interests in these areas are requested to watch this Web site ("What's New" and "For Investigators" pages) and the "NIH Guide" for details concerning these initiatives.

February 21, 2002: First NIBIB Research RFAs Announced
The first two requests for applications (RFAs) issued by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) have been announced in the "NIH Guide".
RFA Number EB-02-001 is titled "Research and Development of Systems and Methods for Molecular Imaging" and supports novel investigations for molecular imaging and spectroscopy development that can be broadly applied to research on biological or disease processes. The primary focus of this RFA is in vivo molecular imaging and/or spectroscopy including devices, methods, and contrast agents for biomedical research and human investigations.
RFA Number EB-02-002 is titled "Sensor Development and Validation" and supports innovative basic and applied research targeted at sensor development including sensor arrays, their biointerfaces, quality control issues, and validation and data interpretation.
Both RFAs use the NIH Research Project Grants (R01) and the Phased Innovation Award (R21/R33) mechanisms. Deadlines for both RFAs include March 29, 2002, for letters of intent and April 24, 2002, for applications to be received at the NIH. Detailed information on these opportunities is available in the announcements which are accessible in the "NIH Guide" or the "FOR INVESTIGATORS" section of this Web site.
February 26, 2002: The NIBIB is Growing - Changing Office Locations
The NIBIB is continuing to grow and add staff during this initial development period. Since September 2001, most Institute staff have been located in the Room 1B37 area in Building 31 on the NIH Main Campus. We have outgrown this area and as a result, the Program and Grants Management staff have moved to an off-campus location at 2 Democracy Plaza (6707 Democracy Boulevard) which is about five miles from the main campus and is near the Montgomery Mall area of Washington. NIBIB staff currently occupy part of the ninth floor of the Democracy Two Building.
Program staff who have been relocated include Joan Harmon, Mollie Sourwine, and Richard Swaja. Grants Management staff who have relocated include Annette Hanopole and Lisa Moeller. New telephone, fax, and office numbers for these staff are available in the "Staff Contacts" portion of the "About NIBIB" area of this Web site. E-mail addresses do not change.
The Acting Director's Office (Donna Dean), Budget staff (Christine Hollingsworth, Emma Williams, and Stacy Wallick), and Administrative staff (Charles Best, Ruby Akomeah, and Ivelisse Rodriguez) remain in the Room 1B37 area of Building 31 on the Main Campus. No changes occur in their phone or fax numbers.
As computer locations and phone lines are being changed, there may be some delays or difficulties contacted some of the NIBIB staff who have moved. We apologize for any convenience, but please recognize that there will be some growing pains as the Institute adds staff and develops its research and training programs.
Contact information for NIBIB staff can be found at in the About NIBIB section.
