Recovery Act Limited Competition: Biomedical Research Core Centers to Enhance Research Resources (P30)

The NIBIB plans to provide funds to encourage domestic training institutions to enhance their capacity to conduct biomedical research in all areas relevant to the NIBIB mission (http://www.nibib.nih.gov/Research/ProgramAreas), including applications for support of basic, translational, and clinical research. Support for these research cores will come from funds provided to NIH through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ("Recovery Act" or "ARRA"), Public Law 111-5. Please refer to the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts Notice: RFA-OD-09-005 for a general description of this program. In addition to the information in the Guide Notice, below are NIBIB-specific details which should be considered in preparing a grant application to the NIBIB.

The NIBIB solicits grant applications for multi-disciplinary/interdisciplinary research core centers that propose to bridge the biological and physical sciences. Applicant institutions may submit only one application in response to this FOA. The NIBIB expects to make between 2 and 4 awards of $250-$500K/year in total costs for each of two years (FY2009 and FY2010), for a total funding commitment of approximately $2 million in total costs over the FY2009 and FY2010 period.

Applicants should specify the department(s) or center(s) in which their research core centers will be based. Newly-hired faculty receiving support under this award are expected to be based in engineering or physical science departments but should, through joint appointment(s) with other academic unit(s), be allowed access University-wide research resources and allowed to serve as mentors for graduate programs in other academic unit(s). Commitment of institutional resources and continuity of support is expected after the end of the award. As described in the FOA, highest priority will be given to institutions that provide (1) institutional support concomitant with P30 support and (2) assurance that appropriate salary support and other research resources necessary for success, will be provided for newly hired individual(s) for two or more years following the end of the award.

Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a letter of intent below before submitting a complete application. The Program Director below must also approve recruitment plans and draft offer letters to ensure that they are consistent with the requirements and goals of this FOA.

Submission of Applications:

  • Letters of intent must be received by April 29, 2009, and complete applications by May 29, 2009.
