Gift Fund – Donations to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering
Can NIBIB accept donations?
Yes. Although the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) is a Federally-funded organization and not a fund-raising organization, NIBIB has been authorized by the United States Congress to accept donations and bequests from individuals and organizations who wish to support the Institute's mission. Donations to NIBIB are deposited in our "Gift Fund" aaccount, which is separate from the appropriations that the Institute receives from Congress.
How are donations used?
Since NIBIB's basic operating expenses and administrative costs are funded through our Congressional appropriation, all Gift Fund donations to NIBIB are used for special projects, research, and events related to biomedical imaging and bioengineering, unless otherwise specified by the donor.
Although specific projects supported by the Gift Fund may vary from year to year, depending on the needs of the institute, the following types of activities may be supported by the Gift Fund:
- Research studies
- Research workshops and conference held in support of NIBIB's mission
- Scientific staff recruitment efforts
- Printing of materials for the general public and health professionals
- Program support
How can I donate to the Institute?
Individuals and organizations can contribute to the NIBIB Gift Fund via check or money order made payable to the "National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering" and should include a notation "NIBIB Gift Fund." Donors should send a letter along with the check or money order indicating that the money is to be used to support the mission of the NIBIB or any of its authorized activities. Donations and letters should be sent to: Office of Financial Management National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering National Institutes of Health 31 Center Drive, Room 1C14, MSC 2281 Bethesda, MD 20892-2281 Because all donations are acknowledged, the donor's name and address should be included in the letter. If you wish to donate money in memory of or in honor of an individual, the name of the deceased and anyone else (such as a family member) who should receive acknowledgement of the donation should be indicated. Acknowledgement letters send to third parties will not indicate the amount of the donation. If an individual wishes to bequeath money to the Institute in a will, it is recommended that the address of NIBIB be included in the will.
