Yvonne Chan is the Director of Digital Health (DH) and Personalized Medicine (PM) at the Icahn Institute of Genomics and Multiscale Biology at Mount Sinai. Her role is to lead the Institute in study design, execution, and management of all DH and PM related initiatives conducted at the Institute. Her team’s charter is to rapidly drive large-scale, active participation of patients in biomedical research and clinical care, by leveraging the latest digital technology and advanced analytic techniques. Dr. Chan is a board-certified Emergency Physician and her research interests include digital/ mobile health, clinical trials, and informed consent for research.
Dr. Chan is the principal investigator for the Mount Sinai Asthma Mobile Health Study using the Asthma Health app powered by Apple’s ResearchKit. The team conducted the prospective observational mobile health study between 3/9/2015 and 12/31/2016 and successfully enrolled ~10,000 participants from the U.S., U.K., and Ireland. The investigators demonstrated that a broad scale asthma study could be conducted in its entirety via a smartphone application, including remote participant recruitment, consent, enrollment, and data collection. Additionally, her team assessed the clinical characteristics of cohort recruited via this platform, the validity of data collected, user retention patterns, and user data sharing preferences. Encouraging results based on the first six-month data from this study were reported in Chan et.al. Nature Biotechnology, April 2017.
