Breakdown of Blood Brain Barrier May be Early Event in Alzheimer's Disease

NIBIB-funded researchers and their collaborators have used magnetic resonance imaging to show age-dependent breakdown of the human blood brain barrier (BBB). The study suggests that BBB breakdown is an early event in the aging human brain that begins in the hippocampus, a region critical for learning and memory that is affected early in Alzheimer's Disease.
