Re-shaping Biomedical Implants Improves Biocompatibility

NIBIB-funded bioengineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology demonstrated the role of geometry in the function of biomedical implants. The group implanted capsules carrying insulin-producing cells into a diabetic mouse model demonstrating that increased capsule size significantly reduced the immune response to the capsule allowing it to function five times longer than a more conventional, smaller capsule.
