Laboratory and Project Description
The prospective summer intern will work on a project to advance the state-of-the-art in radiologic diagnosis of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most frequently identified cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in men. The project uses magnetic resonance and ultrasound fusion-guided biopsies to improve the accuracy of early detection of prostate cancer. The purpose of the project is to develop fully-automated methods to accurately and rapidly find abnormalities in the prostate on multispectral magnetic resonance images. The ultimate goal is to use this computer system to improve the diagnostic yield of targeted biopsies. Under the supervision of a Staff Scientist expert, the intern will assist in the development of a computer-aided detection (CAD) system for prostate cancer in MRI. The intern will work with clinicians to evaluate the accuracy of the system. The intern will learn state-of-the-art techniques and how to use them to solve a real-world clinical problem.
