Dr. Shunmugavel received his Ph.D. from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, India. His early research focus was on understanding the process of neuropathological process exacerbated by the inflammatory mechanisms of the central nervous system (CNS) and also using anti-inflammatory and nitrosative compounds to quench the progression of secondary insult. During his first postdoctoral training at Oregon Health and Science University, Portland, OR, Dr. Shunmugavel got interested in using non-invasive imaging modalities like functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify the altered resting state functional connectivity of rodent brain under conditions of drug abuse. Currently, Dr. Shunmugavel, at Quantitative Medical Imaging section of NIBIB is applying diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a ferret animal model to investigate white matter water diffusion changes associated with vasogenic and interstitial edema.
