Advanced control of MRI hardware for imaging of the brain

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows us to image the human body non-invasively, free of radiation and with extraordinary tissue contrast. The image is generated by the interaction of the hydrogen nuclear spin with a set of external magnetic fields. Each of these fields are generated by a different layer of hardware with unique specifications.

The MRI Engineering Team (MRIEngT) is dedicated to developing state-of-the-art hardware technologies and its control to advance human brain MRI and, more broadly, the next generation of MRI scanners. The team works in the unique research environment of the In Vivo NMR Center, a multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary facility, located in the NIH Clinical Center (NIH Bethesda campus), with a wide range of MRI scanners (from 0.064 T to 14 T) for both human and animal studies.

The prospective intern will work on a project related to the control of a novel technology. The intern will have access to a prior-knowledge model of the hardware and will explore its combination with machine learning (ML) based models. We welcome motivated students with a background in systems and control, ideally with experience in ML/AI algorithms and some hands-on experience at the electronics lab bench. The intern will receive support from team members to become familiar with the software, hardware, and measurement methods. They will have the opportunity to learn about MRI systems, radio frequency electronics and instrumentation, and innovative brain imaging applications.
