This program supports the development and demonstration of biomaterial interfaces. These modular platform technologies are designed to manipulate and interface with biology to enable new paradigms of clinical intervention for human health.

Emphasis

This program focuses on engineering new prototype biomaterial interfaces to mediate human biology for clinical purposes. These technologies are biochemical, biomechanical, bioelectric, biomagnetic, bioacoustic, and biophotonic transducers designed to interconvert energy and biological action. Projects should be directed toward overcoming a technological challenge that limits biomedical adoption. This program encourages projects that use a design-build-test approach.

Examples of technologies include but are not limited to:

  • nucleases for genome editors for therapeutic DNA editing
  • nano-structured metal oxide surfaces and polymeric hydrogels for implant infection mitigation
  • exosomes and liposomes for therapeutic agent delivery
  • electrically conductive and mechano-sensitive scaffolds for repairing tissue
  • magnetic and acoustic nanoparticles for ablating cells and tissues
  • plasmonic nanorods for tissue suturing

Additional emphasis

Furthermore, this program focuses on the discovery of design principles as key components in the design, build, and test methodology to engineer relevant biomaterials interfaces.
